The cost grows and grows by the minute though it's hanging like a dismal cloud it's a first chance to see the Big North and waiting on the deck, we wish it could be touched I can't tell if this will prove to be a mistake the line's behind we can't go back the choice has been made the track's curves below make the train groan louder going up the hill the air is getting thinner I don't know if we can feel at home in this place What if we can't find a life in this emptiness and all the desert offers us are birds of prey, a constant dry monotony, a blank space without colour and frustration.

Jokes 04:54
Though it changes nothing I remember the breathless sun With your hands on my shoulder Our smiles aren't fading yet In streets pubs and houses, jokes are being told If you share one with me, I promise to laugh Aunque no cambia nada recuerdo el sol sin aliento con tus manos en mi hombro Nuestras sonrisas aún no se borran En calles bares y casas se cuentan bromas Si compartes una conmigo te prometo reír

Company Town 05:41
Climb, climb, climb the tailing's cake Stamping, stamping cueca feet Earth shakes in our company town at night Grit, grit, grit covered streets Sinking, sinking metal sheets I turn to see the factory is waiting and it's taunting me again Sometimes I see it in my dreams, it's walls are suffocating me at last Sube, sube, sube la masa de relave zapateando, zapateando el paso de cueca La tierra se mueve en nuestro pueblo industrial de noche Gravilla, gravilla, gravilla que cubre las calles Hundidas, hundidas chapas de metal Giro y veo que la fábrica está esperando y me provoca de nuevo A veces se me aparece en sueños, sus muros me ahogan al fin

Through the flowering desert a visit to the coast the 18th of September Face to face they circle round a courting ritual on open ground begins Elusive hen sweeping her skirts, aggressive rooster kneeling down on dirt in conquest A sky of fighting kite strings coated in powdered glass two tangle, one's dropping having looked on from the pavement and waited for a cut three children start running A través del desierto florido una visita a la costa el 18 de septiembre Cara a cara se corretean en círculos y empieza un ritual de cortejo a campo abierto La gallina escurridiza agita la falda, el fiero gallo hinca una rodilla en la tierra conquistador Un cielo de volantines que pelean con hilo curado dos se enredan, uno cae Atentos desde la vereda esperando al que se corte tres niños parten corriendo

Crushed caliche, bringer of work, dissolves in the iodine house Internal heat coils are filled with steam, face covered by sweat-sodden cloth The colourless mix of rocks everyday we see break in between the fixed jaw and the swing They leave behind a dust that's sitting on our lungs stifling the room it's hard to breath Sweet saltpeter, once hidden gift, removed from the wrought iron tank The constant leaching must carry on regardless with or without us We lean over the water that separates the white gold from the indefinable clutter El caliche machacado, proveedor de trabajo, se disuelve en la casa del yodo Los serpentines se llenan de vapores, el rostro cubierto con un trapo bañado en sudor La mezcla de las rocas sin color que cada día vemos molidas entre la mandíbula fija y la móvil sueltan un polvo que se deposita en nuestros pulmones asfixia la pieza cuesta respirar Dulce salitre, en su momento un regalo escondido, extraído del estanque de hierro forjado La continua lixiviación debe continuar a toda costa, con o sin nosotros Nos asomamos sobre el agua que separa el oro blanco de la indefinible maraña

I'll put down the pickaxe if you step off the field, we're not asking much that the vats are covered and the tokens disappear, eighteen pence for a day They'll take the blame, the threat is real, they're dangerous under the surface This is not a question of coins but of principles, of authority, and authority must be respected.

Back To Work 02:57

Not easily deterred by a little discouragement or chemical phenomena of the simplest kind but this open-ended work is not worth the trouble and spontaneous union is impossible anyway Three years later with public disparagement starts an endless search for a better heated catalyst Forget iron, chromium and manganese go to Berlin, find a batch of osmium 2nd of July in the morning experiment there's tension and a fear of the spite of things Constant high pressure and elevated temperatures a perfect separation of ammonia from its elements Enrich the earth, don't stop, you know we're approaching war I've taken apart her sewing machines planed down our kitchen table picked locks and carved up oak and pine and now see gas and metal as changeable A continuous process that sleep can't break demands caused by needs that I can't control we're finished when the supply of nitrates done but I know I'll solve the nitrogen problem Crop fertilizer and poisonous gas using vapour reacting with the glowing coke Iron's rare stability in impure forms and the risk of running at a 100atm The relentless force of human progress the unremitting drive of new discovery bitter Haber can't sleep but won't apologise as Bosch picks over the Oppau blast Prices are dropping production is slowing Prices are dropping people are leaving Prices are dropping production is stopping Prices are dropping Salitreras are closing Sin desanimarse fácilmente por poca cosa ni fenómenos químicos de lo más simples pero esta investigación en proceso no vale la pena y la unión espontánea es imposible de todas formas Tres años después con menosprecio público comienza una búsqueda interminable por un mejor catalizador térmico Olvida el hierro, cromo y manganeso anda a Berlín, busca una pila de osmio Experimento del 2 de julio por la mañana hay tensión y temor de lo que siempre sale mal Alta presión constante y temperaturas elevadas una perfecta separación del amoniaco y sus elementos Enriquece la tierra, no pares, sabes que se acerca la guerra Desarmé sus máquinas de coser molí nuestra mesa de la cocina desmonté cerrojos y trocé roble y pino y ahora el metal y el gas me parecen modificables Un proceso continuo que el sueño no puede romper demandas causadas por necesidades que no puedo controlar terminamos cuando el suministro de nitratos se acaba pero sé que resolveré el problema del nitrógeno Fertilizante agrícola y gas venenoso con vapor que reacciona al coque encendido La excepcional estabilidad del hierro en formas impuras y el riesgo de trabajar en 100 atm La imparable fuerza del progreso humano el infatigable impulso de nuevos descubrimientos Un atormentado Haber no puede dormir pero no se disculpa mientras Bosch examina la explosión de Oppau Los precios caen la producción se frena Los precios caen la gente se va Los precios caen la producción se detiene Los precios caen las salitreras cierran

More departure, but I'm going nowhere I know they'll miss the breeze, the night You've said that in forty years the people will have disappeared completely The nitrate will have been replaced by iodine, lithium or copper Empty houses, ruined shops, the goalposts and the swimming pool are rusting The seats inside the theatre and chapel windows will be stolen Más partidas, pero no voy a ningún lado Sé que echarían de menos la brisa, la noche Has dicho que en cuarenta años la gente habrá desaparecido por completo El nitrato habrá sido reemplazado por yodo, litio o cobre Casas vacías, tiendas en ruinas, los postes del arco y la piscina oxidados Las butacas del teatro y las ventanas de la capilla serán robadas

Dismantling 02:41
Dig up the paving stones from Montt Street that pressed into my feet Around the smokestacks there's rafters made of Douglas Fir There isn't long, we'll work 'til dawn There's copper in the bath taps, rip the pipes out from the wall Go back to my old home, find the tin roof's gone Before too long, we'll see the sun I put this up and I'll take it apart I put this up so I'll take it apart Saco los adoquines de la calle Montt que hienden mis pies Alrededor de las chimeneas industriales hay vigas de pino Oregón No queda mucho, trabajaremos hasta el amanecer Hay cobre en las llaves del baño, arranco las cañerías del muro Vuelvo a mi antigua casa, descubro que desapareció el tejado de zinc Pronto veremos el sol Saco esto y lo desarmo Saco esto para desarmarlo
