Not easily deterred by a little discouragement
or chemical phenomena of the simplest kind
but this open-ended work is not worth the trouble
and spontaneous union is impossible anyway

Three years later with public disparagement
starts an endless search for a better heated catalyst
Forget iron, chromium and manganese
go to Berlin, find a batch of osmium

2nd of July in the morning experiment
there's tension and a fear of the spite of things
Constant high pressure and elevated temperatures
a perfect separation of ammonia from its elements

Enrich the earth, don't stop, you know we're approaching war

I've taken apart her sewing machines
planed down our kitchen table
picked locks and carved up oak and pine
and now see gas and metal as changeable

A continuous process that sleep can't break
demands caused by needs that I can't control
we're finished when the supply of nitrates done
but I know I'll solve the nitrogen problem

Crop fertilizer and poisonous gas
using vapour reacting with the glowing coke
Iron's rare stability in impure forms
and the risk of running at a 100atm

The relentless force of human progress
the unremitting drive of new discovery
bitter Haber can't sleep but won't apologise
as Bosch picks over the Oppau blast
